Girl Meets Mr. Squirrels

After Riley and Maya get into an argument and refuse to speak to each other, Cory calls in help from a specially trained mediator, none other than his brother Eric and his alter ego, Plays with Squirrel. • The title references the return of Eric Matthews and his alter ego, Plays with Squirrels.
  • This episode draws heavily from the Boy Meets World episodes "The War" and "Seven the Hard Way". Cory mentions the fight he and his friends had back in college before he calls on Eric for help. Eric returns with his Plays with Squirrels persona from the second of those episodes, even repeating his quote about losing friends from that episode.
  • Eric's advice "Lose one friend. Lose all friends. Lose yourself" was the only bit of text that Plays with Squirrels had written in his 3,000 page manifesto of the Secret of Life.

Quotes (48)

Eric: Now, which one of you is Riley's friend Moesha?

Topanga: I owe you an apology, Eric. People who underestimate you are making a big mistake. Cory was right to have faith in you. You really are a mature, normal human being.
Eric: I am not!

Farkle: How could she disagree with him? He's right.
Maya: You're next.
Farkle: I wanna be first.

Cory: This is my brother Eric and there's no one I trust more in the art of mediation.
Eric: Mediation. Sitting cross-legged going Ohmmm, Ohmm, my legs are killing me.

As Cory, Topanga and Auggie listen in from the hallway, Maya and Riley are arguing in her bedroom. Topanga recognizes this is a big fight for them. Later, at school, the pair are still fighting in the hallway when Lucas, Farkle and Zay join them. Lucas doesn't want to be responsible for starting a fight between them, but Maya says it's too late as Riley didn't defend Maya when Lucas called her a "short stack of pancakes". As they enter the classroom, Farkle realizes there's no chance Cory will finally teach his history lesson on Belgium in 1831 today, so he scrubs the board clean. After Riley and Maya say they're no longer talking to each other, Cory mentions the fight he and his friends had back in college. Cory says it will take someone with a special set of skills to get the friends back together again.

In the apartment, Riley hears a rustling sound at the door and goes to answer it. When she opens the door, she finds Eric dressed in his Plays with Squirrels clothes. After Riley blows her safety whistle and slams the door shut, she tells her parents there was a caveman at the door. Topanga explains it isn't a caveman, it's her uncle Eric. After Cory lets his brother in, Eric says hello to Topanga, Riley and Auggie. Eric explains that he's now the mayor of a small French-Canadian community in Quebec called St. Upid. After Eric wonders why he was summoned here, Riley explains how she's fallen out with her best friend. Eric repeats his Secret of Life from Plays with Squirrels' manifesto, "Lose one friend. Lose all friends. Lose yourself."

The family gathers in Riley's room so Eric can reconcile her and Maya. As Riley and Maya continue bickering, they explain their argument to Eric, who now doesn't think he can fix this. After learning that Maya is self conscious about her height and upset that Lucas called her short, Eric tries to stretch Maya and then shrink Riley, to no avail. Topanga starts to feel vindicated that Eric will be no use here, but Cory is still counting on his brother to come through. Later, in Cory's class room, Eric is there to fix the spat between Riley and Maya. After Cory introduces Eric to the class, Eric leads the children out into the hallway to talk through their problem. Maya reveals that she's most upset that Riley didn't defend her because she's always doing the same for Riley, who people mock as being tall and klutzy. Riley, hearing for the first time how people feel about her, begins to see why it's important to have friends who have your back even when the things other people are saying are true. Cory thinks Eric has solved the problem, but Eric believes it goes deeper.

Farkle points out that these things hurt precisely because they are true, admitting that he sometimes feels like Squeaky Mouse. Farkle blames Lucas, the "freak", for making him feel like that. Lucas tells his classmates that it's not always easy being him, but they have little time for his complaint. When Zay mocks Lucas as a freak, Lucas tells "flat butt" to shut up. Zay is surprised to learn he has no butt, although it does explain why it hurts when he sits down. Eric tells the kids they're all going through the same thing and that their friends aren't the enemy. Later, back at the apartment, Maya realizes she'll just have to be comfortable being short. Topanga points out that she herself is not very tall, which Maya appreciates as Topanga is the fiercest woman she knows.

At Topanga's bakery, Riley tells Maya that with a whole world of people out there who might occasionally say things about who they are or how they look, it's a good idea to have friends who'll defend them no matter what. Riley tells Maya she's gonna be that for her from now on. Farkle tries to scruff up Lucas's hair to make him more relatable, but somehow he just ends up looking even better. Meanwhile, Topanga thanks Eric, who is dressed again as Plays with Squirrels, for helping out and tells him that Cory was right to have faith in him.

Before Eric leaves, Farkle asks him if he's even considered world domination. Cory tells them how the world thankfully has protections in place that will stop that from happening. Later, a news broadcast mentions how a U.S. senator from New York did something so stupid he can't possibly be re-elected - unless they find an even bigger blockhead to run against him. The news broadcast is being watched in a darkened room with an American flag, where a mysterious man leafs through of potential people to run against his candidate, settling on a profile of Eric.
